Duck Flies
23rd March 2012
Very late posting today. i normally try and post just after midnight but was unable to connect to the internet last night so here I am nine hours later. The photograph is from Castle Bourke. If you look carefully in the sky, to the left of the castle and under the branches on the right, you can see what looks like specs of dirt. Well that dirt is in fact swarms of what I thought were midges. it turns out they are duck flies. The fishermen among you will know, I had never heard of them before. But anyway it seems the duck flies dont like the wind and so were sheltering on the leeward side of the hedges, and would swarm all over you. So you can imagine I did not take as long taking this photograph as I normally would. And my three companions beat a hasty retreat to the car. By the time I got back to the car the drivers side of the car was completely covered by these little flies. i really should have taken a photograph, but with them swarming all around i too decided to just get into the car.I was not very popular however because as soon as I opened the car door they followed me in, in very large numbers. we had to drive quite a distance with all the windows open to try and get rid of them!
