The fairy Tree

04th October 2010
I am always fascinated by this small group of hawthorn trees located on the main road between Kiltimagh and Castlebar. Tradition has it that these hawthorn trees are "fairy trees" and it is unlucky to destroy them , so they often survive in the middle of fields because farmers are afraid to cut them down. This particular group look very ancient and are growing around a small hump , I wonder is it a prehistoric tomb or somthing of that nature. I often stop to photograph them and have not yet got the picture I want, nor have I today, but I did think the rainbow added to the "magical mystery"

Photo comment By Lyle: What some see as superstition, others see as respect - I would be in the latter camp. Nice shot and lovely rainbow - would a tight vertical crop of just the mound, fairy thorns and rainbow help? bw lyle
Photo comment By Eamonn: Thanks lyle you could be right, but the "real shot" is from below the mound looking up with a wide lens. This is taken from the road with a 200mm lens, there is a large ditch between me and the mound and I did not have time to walk to the gate, but I will, the only problem is pre ordering the rainbow to arrive at the right moment!!
Photo comment By lyle: you would need to have word with the fairy-folk about that!
