Titanic

20th April 2012
As you will be well aware from all the media coverage it is 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic . Mayo has a particular link to this tragic event and particularly the parish of Addergoole, Lahardane. 14 people from the parish set sail from Cobh on the great ship and only 3 survived. I had heard of a model that had been built locally and this afternoon was my first chance to go and see it, I am not going to get another chance for at least a week.I thought it may not be there in a week so I had better go today. I was really glad I did!. It is moored on Loch Conn just offshore from the Addergoole cemetery . I had seen some pictures but it is hard to judge the scale. But I must say that as you approach the cemetery you go over the brow of a hill and your first sighting of the "Titanic" on the Loch would really take your breath away. It seems like a fitting tribute and a credit to the volunteers who built it. You can learn more about the Addergoole 14 from the excellent "Mayo Link" facebook page
